Keep in mind that you’ll need to renew your domain registration every year. Sometimes, a hosting company will cover your registration fees as long as your account meets specific criteria and is in good standing, while other companies require you to pay the registration fee.

In particular, Web Hosting Hub uses BoldGrid as a site builder. BoldGrid is actually an add-on to WordPress, so there’s no lock-in. This overcomes the major problem of most site builders: you’re locked into that host and that tool, often requiring you to completely rebuild your site if you want to expand. By using a WordPress-based solution, all of the rather considerable power of WordPress is available for future expansion.
A dedicated IP address isn’t necessary for domain owners who are just starting out, but it’s worth considering. There’s nothing inherently wrong with sharing an IP address (the number that locates your website within a network) but it can lead to consequences beyond your control. For example, if one of the websites on your shared server sends spam emails or engages in other illicit behavior, that website’s IP address may be blocked from other sites or services. The firewall used to block the IP won’t be able to distinguish between the offending site and yours: someone else starts sending spam emails and you’re temporarily blacklisted from sending emails, too. If you aren’t the offending party this will likely be temporary, but still no fun.
WordPress is one of the most popular content management systems (CMS) in the world, and as such, many web hosting providers offer options that cater to this rather large niche. You can certainly host your WordPress site on a standard shared hosting plan, but by choosing a WordPress-specific option, you’ll spend less time configuring and managing your WordPress installation.
However, custom WordPress websites can easily cost way over $5,000. Just add custom eCommerce and you’re likely at $10,000 minimum. Membership sites? Also in 5 figures. Any other sort of abnormal custom functionality also adds up.
Now – getting back to our previous examples – Alexa.com, Linux.org, eLearningEuropa.info, and Yahoo.co.uk – note that all these domains end with a different ‘extension’ – .com, .org, .info, .co.uk. We call this “extension” as top level domain (shortform:TLD).
WPEngine is a managed WordPress hosting company, I don’t really know how they infrastructure looks like, probably for lower plans is still shared hosting, however due to the pricing difference, is hard to compare with companies like hostgator/siteground .
In our in-depth WordPress hosting review, we came to a conclusion that if you are looking to start a blog, then you cannot go wrong with Bluehost. The fact that they offer you a free domain and free SSL for the price of $2.75 per month, it’s very hard to beat.
Upon reflection, we would lean away from Bluehost on the grounds of a clunky backend interface, comparatively poor WordPress installation tools, slightly erratic performance and inflexible long-term contract requirements.
A dedicated server is the most independent way to go but not for personal bloggers or small business owners. The downside of this enterprise-level web hosting option is its steep price. That, and you’ll either need expertise or access to an expert in setting up and managing a dedicated server, because any maintenance needed on the server is done by you, the owner.
Arvixe is the best domain hosting service. It provides a great deal on domain registration, promising one free domain name for as long as you use Arvixe your web host. Its basic plans also support more domains than most of its competitors, with the Personal Class plan for Linux supporting up to six domains (most plans support one or two).
Hi Robert. I know this is not related here but you can try explaining the differences between wordpress.com and wordpress.org. I was confused at the beginning as to why installing plugins didnt work until i realised i used the com and not .org.

I’m not going to say anything bad about any of the hosts on the list, other than to say that it is the most popular doesn’t usually mean the best and I would encourage people to look far beyond these five. I mean McDonald’s sells a whole bunch of cheeseburgers, but no one is saying that they make the best cheeseburger. I work with Nexcess, and as a shared WordPress host they offer great service and support and succeed within a few niche areas. Smaller hosts with a specific focus will usually offer a much better level of service and support than bigger hosts who see clients purely as a numbers game. That’s how I feel.

Telling someone what I do for a living is always an interesting experience. Either we’re totally in sync, both lost in conversation about WordPress woes or some time-saving program update, or it’s me talking with crickets in response. There’s just something about web hosting. It’s hit-or-miss whether someone is up to speed on the nuances of all that this industry has to offer.
Most free hosting providers incorporate advertising into their services. They might require attribution links or banner ads on user sites or send lots marketing e-mails to sell paid hosting or some other upgrade.
Hi Robert, thanks for your thorough hosting comparison. I wasn’t aware that both BlueHost and HostGator offered a Cloud hosting service. I am surprised about their pricing ($6.95 – $15.95 /mo) compared with SiteGround’s Cloud that starts at $80. I’m wondering what could justify SiteGroud’s higher pricing … faster cores, SSD drives?
Free can refer to both the price and freedom, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gratis_versus_libre. When you say that “WordPress is not free in the sense of free beer”, you’re implying that people have to pay in order to obtain a copy of WordPress, which isn’t true. WordPress is free-as-in-speech because the GPL gives you the freedom to modify it, but it’s also free-as-in-beer because you don’t have to pay for it.
When working on a shared server, you’ll rely on your web host to keep base technology updated, so software version can be a good litmus test as to how on-top-of-things each web host is. We didn’t require hosts to have the latest technology, just versions that are still being supported by the original manufacturers. Outdated software can be a security risk. Only Media Temple missed this mark, offering MySQL version 5.5.3.
Due to the popularity of WordPress, all best web hosting companies come with easy 1-click install options for WordPress. All WordPress hosting companies that we have listed in this guide offer full support for running a WordPress site.
Namecheap offers a 99.9% connectivity guarantee, and is a very easy service to set up, with an initial welcome email that points you in the right direction for everything you might need (backed up by some impressive FAQs). It also plays host to an excellent searchable knowledgebase.
After selecting a provider, it’s highly recommended that you test your internet speed to ensure that the data is being processed in a timely manner. You can visit CNET’s Internet Speed Test to instantly assess your current internet speed.

Shared hosting is web hosting in which the provider houses multiple sites on a single server. For example, Site A shares the same server with Site B, Site C, Site D, and Site E. The upside is that the multiple sites share the server cost, so shared web hosting is generally very inexpensive. In fact, you can find an option for less than $10 per month.
