Every website that exists needs to reside on a server — whether it’s your own or one owned by a web hosting company. That’s a given. What’s not a given, however, is what else sits on that server with your website.

GlowHost had the best customer service of any web hosting company we tested, endearing itself by responding to our emailed list of questions with detailed and thoughtful answers less than an hour after we sent it. As we sent more questions their way, by email and phone call, GlowHost continued to impress with friendly and courteous conversation (although we’re pretty sure their live chat relies on a bot).

However, beginners might be more intimidated to explore Joomla because of the number of available options. In addition to the left menu, there is also a menu on the top bar right above the “Control Panel” logo. To avoid confusion, remember that some of the items from the left and top bar menus are similar, including “Content,” “Users,” and “Extensions.”

Those servers can be dedicated to a specific site (“dedicated servers” – which is expensive) or shared between several clients and web sites (which is much more affordable). This is called “shared web hosting”. All offers on this page are shared hosting.

Since it is possible to transfer to WordPress.org in the future, is it worth it to take advantage of the traffic that the free WordPress provides in the meantime? Or would it be too much of a hassle/inconvenience to my future readers to transfer over?

Whether you use blogging or CMS software, you will need an FTP client, a program that allows you to transfer files from your own computer to your web host’s computer. Again, there are many free FTP programs available (as well as commercial ones). Naturally, if you use a free FTP program, it won’t cost you a cent.

Thanks for doing this writeup! While I truly love SiteGround (I use it myself) and recommend it to clients (30+ at the moment) I’ve been looking for solid alternatives because I get nervous about having all my (clients!) eggs in one basket. A2Hosting seems like a very solid alternative. I’d agree with you about InMotionHosting (who I’ve been impressed with) but they don’t offer Let’s Encrypt or similar free signed certificates and that’s a dead-stop dealbreaker for me.

Thanks for this article. I have to say that I had a terrible experience with Blue Host ‘support’. One operator never responded. The next 2 were sarcastic and asked questions completely bypassing my question. For example – they asked for my domain name though I wasn’t a customer and it didn’t relate to my question. When I asked why, they said their Director of Sales needs domain names to track sales made through the site. They kept me on hold for 2-3 minutes in between each question and as they only partially responded each time, it made for a very aggravating experience. Bots may have been an improvement. Definitely, would not use them.

Limited support may actually be the biggest gamble users take with free hosting. Free WordPress hosts often time have a support forum for posting questions, but don’t count on quick and helpful responses. With free hosting, support is a matter of luck, not service. Free hosting users get what they pay for.

While hosting your own website on your local computer is a lot of fun, if you want a website that people can actually access, you might want to get your own web hosting plan somewhere. Bluehost is offering unlimited web hosting for $3.95 per month, with full support for PHP and MySQL. It’s definitely an easy way to get started with a website, and they have simple 1-click installers to get you started with popular software like WordPress and others.

WP Engine is one of the most popular managed WordPress hosting providers. Their hosting plans include powerful in-house performance optimization, managed updates, 1-click staging environment, and more.

For consistency, we tested the shared hosting plan (we’ll explain the differences between the types of hosting plans later). Typically, shared hosting is the lowest performance type of hosting, so we felt that if this was fast – the better plans would be even better.

During our years of evaluating web hosting providers, we’ve noticed that several offer an alluring, affordable plan, only to triple the monthly price and charge nearly $20 for domain registration when renewal comes around. Our comparison displays the regular monthly rates for both one-year personal and business plans after the promotional price has expired. We’ve included this price so you know exactly what you can expect to spend after the first year.

Shared hosting customers typically expect downwards of 30,000 monthly site visitors, and they don’t want to pay an arm and a leg to receive them. For that reason, many of the most affordable web hosts include a free domain name registration and other free amenities in their shared hosting plans.

Limits – Because the server architecture is specialized for WordPress, often you are limited to run only WordPress based sites. But that’s what you were looking to do anyways. You also cannot run all WordPress plugins. Managed WordPress hosting providers block plugins that slows down your site. So this is not entirely a disadvantage, but it can be an issue for larger companies.

If your existing (or future) website has images, blog posts and video content, you need a service that provides unlimited disk space. Further, if you anticipate a lot of traffic to your site, you should also seek a package with unlimited bandwidth.
