You type the domain name into your web browser. The DNS makes sure you get connected to the right computer. And that computer or server has your website files hosted on it. Let’s look at a diagram to make sure this all clicks in your head.

SiteGround offer daily backups, server isolation and 24/7 support on all three WordPress packages with pricing ranging from $9.95 per month to $29.95 per month. Specialist features such as one-click WordPress Staging and GIT support are available on the higher-tiered packages.

By default, your website is currently only accessible by the computer that WampServer is installed on.  That’s perfect for anyone who’s just using their WAMP server for testing or development purposes, but to make your website accessible to the rest of the world, click on the WampServer icon and click “Put Online”.

Since prices of the various components change from time to time, I have linked to the pages providing the prices in addition to mentioning a general figure here. You should always follow the links to the vendors’ sites to get the latest up-to-date prices, since the ballpark figure I list here may no longer be accurate by the time you read this. Prices are stated in US dollars.

HostMetro only has two plans, a $2.95/month Mega Max and a $6.95/month Super Max plan. The lower-end plan offers all the basic Web hosting services we’ve come to expect. The Super Max plan adds an SSL certificate, SEO help, and a daily malware scan.

Because we offer what is known as a shared architecture, our customers share both the hardware and the “pipes” we use to transmit data across the web, so we do monitor bandwidth to ensure optimum performance for our customers. Again, we are able to support more than 99.5% of customers with no issues at all. However, in some wonderful cases, customers become so successful that their traffic and data transfer outgrow our shared architecture. When that happens, we work with the customer to identify scalable solutions, such as our Virtual Private Servers.

However, “unlimited” doesn’t necessarily mean what you think it does. You’re probably expected unlimited plans to allow you to use as much of a given resource (whether it’s bandwidth, disk space, or an email address) as you need, but it’s more likely that your web host hasn’t set a limit on your resource usage.

I do not work for GoDaddy, but I have used them for a number of years doing WordPress development. I currently subscribe to 1 Ultimate Hosting package and multiple Premium Business Hosting packages. Here’s my 2 cents.

Although it is somewhat unusual, you may find yourself in a situation where you need to purchase a more expensive domain. Usually this will be a one-time fee and can run anywhere from $100 to 100,000 and up. In addition to this fee, you will also need to pay around $12 per year for your domain once it’s been purchased.

With all this information, it’s quite easy to get overwhelmed. After reading this guide, often users email us asking for personalized recommendations for managed WordPress hosting suitable for their growing websites.

And you are waiting for their response, and “please, be on hold”, and “thank you for your patience “, and “I am still checking” – It takes more then 1 hour just to make them understand where is the problem ! But then they start to convince you that this is ok. How it’s ok ? I still have my old (basic) account which is not expired and where everything works fine !

The great thing about it is that you get SSD disk space without any additional fees (SSDs are known for their superior performance compared to the other hard disk technologies). Also, you can have 2 websites on this plan, and you get a free SSL certificate.

It is not something physical that you can touch or see; it is merely a string of characters that give your website an identity (yes, a name, like human and businesses). Now, here are some quick examples: Google.com is a domain name; so are Alexa.com, Linux.org, eLearningEuropa.info, as well as Yahoo.co.uk.

FastComet’s customer service was good, but uneven. They were one of only six companies who responded to our email inquiry, responding to all of our questions within an hour, and we had a pleasant time with their live chat. But when we called, although their phone rep representative was friendly and eager to be helpful, she constantly misheard our questions and took forever to work her way through a response. At one point, seemingly unprompted, she began listing off different types of domain names (there are many). ended up cutting the call short and turning to the site’s email support, live chat, and knowledge base instead, which are all superb. If phone-based customer service is your top priority, we’d suggest GlowHost, below.

I would say that the cost in time to learn all the DIY aspects, and stay current, are pretty huge. If that’s an investment in a marketable skill, great, if not, it might be better to just hire someone and keep doing what you do to make money.

If setting up and customizing a theme is a little beyond what you’re prepared to do, or you just want something a little more custom, you can still get a reasonably priced design. If you hire a designer or developer to help customize an existing theme, you can expect to pay anywhere from $500 to $5,000 depending on the complexity of your theme changes and the expertise of the person you’re working with.

Which features cost extra? As you compare services, you want to know what features you need, and whether they’re included with the plan or if they cost extra, so you can add them into your calculations. For example, if you need a second domain and security services, are they included? Will you need to upgrade to a higher plan or will you need to pay extra annual or monthly fees? Some options that may cost extra include:

Thanks for feedback Bryan! We will make sure that from time to time we will go even deeper and test those hosts again/add others. While Tom shared his own experience with GoDaddy, he also linked to different external sources for reviews, so people can check for themself, those along with real users comments here, should help our visitors decide what is the best for them 🙂

The company doesn’t list a virtual private server offering, but they bill their Elastic Sites service as a VPS alternative, offering the ease of use of a simple shared hosting plan and the performance and scalability of a VPS. GlowHost also offers a number of different cloud hosting plans, with special attention to providing enterprise-grade services.
Good information on comparing these hosts. I had my wordpress site hosted on shared with Hostgator, however after a while I moved it to VPS, but my site kept crashing. I did alot of research and after moving through various host, I finally host with webnet hosting. They provide quick support and also their server speed is pretty fast, I am quiet happy so far
Update: WP Engine have kindly offered a 20% discount to Venture Harbour readers on their first month if you go through this link. You can also get two months free by choosing an annual plan. For full disclosure, we do get paid a commission – but this comes out of WP Engine’s pocket and not yours.
